Equal Justice America awarded a two-year $130,000 Veterans' Rights Fellowship to Kristin Hendriksen (Northwestern J.D. 2020). Kristin worked from September 2020 to August 2022 at Legal Aid Chicago.
"I am so thankful to Equal Justice America for the amazing opportunity to work with Legal Aid Chicago to ensure veterans receive the services and benefits they are entitled to after serving their country. By providing such services, Legal Aid Chicago helps veterans navigate the many obstacles that inhibit them from successfully settling back into life at home, such as the VA's bureaucratic processes and housing market's discriminatory attitude towards them. By participating in this crucial work, I am excited to help veterans obtain the services and benefits they need to further their happiness and personal security." – Kristin Hendriksen (Northwestern J.D. 2020), EJA Immigration Fellow

"After serving their country, veterans often face daunting obstacles to integrating back into life at home. While disability and other benefits are available from the VA, lengthy delays and complex rules make qualifying for those benefits difficult. We are thrilled to have Kristin Hendriksen, our new EJA Fellow, coming on board to help us meet the legal needs of our veterans!"
Hugh “Trey” Daly, Director, Public Benefits Practice Group, Legal Aid Chicago

Our veterans have put their lives on the line for us. We need to make sure their needs are met when they come home.

Kristin worked closely with Legal Aid Chicago’s Veterans' Rights team and Housing Practice Group to provide comprehensive service to veterans, protecting veterans' rights on the crucial issues of housing, health care and employment. Please click here for more information.

Equal Justice America awarded a two-year Immigration Fellowship to Northwestern law graduate Lauren Dana, whose EJA Fellowship ended in September 2019. Lauren did an outstanding job and has been retained at LAC as a staff attorney.

“I am beyond grateful to Equal Justice America for the opportunity to launch my career as a public interest attorney specializing in immigration at LAF. Most of my clients navigate their lives without documentation or status. Many are subjected to unfair labor practices, intimidation, and violence, and threatened with deportation by their employer, partner, or trafficker. My work providing Immigration relief will make my clients safer at work and at home, and will keep their families united.”
– Lauren Dana, Staff Attorney, Immigration and Workers' Rights Practice Group, Legal Aid Chicago, EJA Immigration Fellow 2017-2019

With continued support from the alumni, we look forward to putting more Northwestern law graduates to work providing vitally needed legal assistance to the poor.

"[Cabrini Green Legal Aid] is one of the great legal aids in Chicago. The work that they do is so important and greatly needed. The attorneys and staff there were inspiring in their sense of dedication to the work they do, and the ability to look years ahead in the future to change policies in Illinois and the country. I am proud to have been able to work with them and participate in their mission. Thank you for making it possible."
